How to Make the Most of a Small Bathroom

Written by: Stephanie Stevens

For many people, the bathroom is the most troublesome room in the house. They don't like the way it is, but they don't know how to make it better. The biggest problems arise when you have a very small bathroom. A lot of people think that there is nothing they can do to improve the setting because the bathroom is so cramped. But there are many things you can do to make your bathroom nicer to be in.

One of the first things to look at in a small bathroom is the color scheme. If you really want to open up the room as much as possible, you should use light colors. If you want to add a sense of calm coolness to the room using whites, blues, and other very pale colors will achieve this. For a room that seems more warm and vibrant, bright colors, light browns, and grays work well. This applies not only to your walls, but your shower curtain and pictures as well.

If there is a window in your bathroom make sure it is letting light in. Leave it uncovered if you can. If you can't see through the window due to patterned glass, don't bother with curtains. Plain glass will call for curtains that block the view but not the light. You might be surprised how effective a couple layers of sheer curtains can be at keeping the neighbors from seeing you, but giving your bathroom a very open feeling.

Something a lot of people don't think about is how much their vanity affects the feeling of the bathroom. If you have a large vanity made of some dark material, it is going to overwhelm the space. To cut down on this effect look into glass vanities. These have glass tops and are usually held up by either wood or metal legs. You can get some small cabinets or drawers to put under the vanity to hold your stuff. Your clean towels and washcloths can be stacked on top of these.

Another thing to think about is hanging your towels on the back of the door. There are many hooks and hangers that are made to go on the door that you can buy. This way your towels are hung up but also not taking up wall space.

You need to use your wall space wisely in small bathrooms. A lot of pictures can make it seem even more crowded in there. When you use wall space try to make it useful, such as installing a cabinet or shelf to hold products. Shelves will make the room seem more open, but if you don't want people seeing your stuff you can use light-colored cabinets. Putting some storage over the toilet is a great way to use that part of the wall in an efficient manner.

By making some little changes such as these in your bathroom, you can make it seem bigger and more open. It will be a more pleasant space for you to be in and you will have no reason to be embarrassed about letting guests use it. Also keep in mind that these changes can be done as you have the time and money to take care of them. There is no reason why all the changes have to be made at one time. Each change will make your bathroom nicer and eventually you will be thrilled with the results.
